In a speech given on Tuesday 28th November 1905 at the Town Hall, the then Bailiff, Sir William Henry Venables Vernon, stated that 50 to 60 per cent of the population of Jersey were using Jèrriais:
“Il y a encore 50 à 60 pour cent de la population qui fait usage du dialecte local…”
